ST. LOUIS - The Cardinals-Dodgers series opener looked more like a Home Run Derby than your typical baseball game Thursday night. The sizzling St. Louis Cardinals routed the Los Angeles Dodgers for a 16-8 victory, earning their ninth victory in 11 games. The offense has stepped up amid the surge, averaging around eight runs a game. The Cardinals slugged seven home runs in Thursday's victory, setting two new records at Busch Stadium III. The main record: The seven home runs are the most hit by any Cardinals team at one game since their current ballpark opened in 1946. Also, with the Dodgers hitting two home runs, the teams combined for nine home runs. That's good for the most home runs between two opponents ever in one game at Busch Stadium III. To recap how it all went down Thursday:Bottom 3rdWillson Contreras, a three-run home run to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.Juan Yepez, a solo home run to extend the Cardinals lead to 4-2.Nolan Gorman and Paul DeJong go back-to-back-to-back wit...Heavy smoke from Canadian fires is turning the air brown in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Greeley

Colorado health officials on Friday advised the elderly, children and residents with respiratory ailments in metro Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and Greeley to limit outdoor activity as smoke spreads into the state from fires burning in Canada, contaminating the air people breathe. Those fires raging in western Canada, the result of dry vegetation and unusually high temperatures, have driven thousands of Canadians from their homes and forced shutdowns of oil and gas wells and pipelines — churning up smoke into the atmosphere. More than 90 fires were sweeping across Alberta and other parts of western Canada with authorities estimating more than 1,800 square miles burned — ten times the norm for this time of year.Related ArticlesColorado News | Denver weather: Foggy, cool, low gray clouds and drizzle leading to warmer weekend with sunshine Colorado News | New law aims to spur trust between Colorado police and kids Colorado News | C...Colorado state track meet, Day 2: Live results from Jeffco Stadium

Scouting season is in full swing. With the guarantee that Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog will miss next season, Colorado’s front office is allowed to exceed the salary cap by his average annual contract and can therefore tinker with $7 million extra this offseason. That’s the perk of a bad situation. The constraint is that for now, the Avs must count on Landeskog returning in 2024-25, no matter how unpredictable his specific form of knee injury is.That means they must be careful to deal mostly in one-year contracts, lest they end up trapped over the cap a year from now and are forced to make trades without leverage. The upcoming class of unrestricted free agents is a relatively weak one, narrowing Colorado’s options even more. General manager Chris MacFarland probably won’t find his next second-line center in free agency. The best way to land a player of that caliber is via trade with a non-contender harboring a good center with one year left (Adam Henriqu...Bass guitarist Andy Rourke of The Smiths, one of Britain's most influential bands, dies at 59

Andy Rourke, bass guitarist of The Smiths, one of the most influential British bands of the 1980s, has died after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer, his former bandmate Johnny Marr said Friday. He was 59.In a lengthy post on Instagram, guitarist and songwriter Marr paid tribute to Rourke, who he first met when both were schoolboys in 1975.“Throughout our teens we played in various bands around south Manchester before making our reputations with The Smiths from 1982 to 1987, and it was on those Smiths records that Andy reinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player," Marr said. During their short time together as a four-piece band, The Smiths deliberately stayed away from the mainstream of popular music, garnering a cult following on the independent music scene.Though much of the attention focused on the song-writing partnership of Marr and frontman Steven Patrick Morrissey, better known as Morrissey, the sound of The Smiths owed much to Rourke's bass and his rhythm section ...Embracing Financial Freedom: A Story of Balance and Resilience

An Irvine woman accused of intentionally putting Drano in her husband’s drinks last year pleaded not guilty Thursday to felony poisoning and domestic battery charges.Dr. Yue “Emily” Yu, who works as a dermatologist in Mission Viejo, is accused in an Orange County Grand Jury indictment of poisoning her husband’s tea while the couple was in a contentious divorce and child custody battle.Through one of her attorneys, Yu denied the charges during a brief arraignment hearing Thursday at the Orange County Superior Courthouse in Santa Ana.Prosecutors allege that Yu’s husband noticed a strange taste in his tea beginning in April 2022 and, suspecting his wife was putting something in the drinks, installed a pair of video cameras in their kitchen. The cameras on three occasions captured Yu taking a bottle of liquid drain cleaner from underneath a sink and pouring it into her husband’s drinks, according to prosecutors. PARIS (AP) — This year’s French Open will not be quite the same without Rafael Nadal. His energy. His lefty forehands and two-fisted backhands. His sliding across the red clay of Court Philippe Chatrier. His familiar limbs-spread, flat-on-his-back mixture of relief and celebration after winning the championship — whether the year was 2005 or 2019 or any of the many others that add up to a record 14 times in all.Nadal, a 36-year-old from Spain, announced at a news conference Thursday that the hip injury that has kept him out of action since January will force him to miss his annual trip to compete at Roland Garros. The clay-court Grand Slam tournament has not been contested without him since 2004, when an ankle problem kept him away. He made his debut the following year, still a teenager, and began his title-monopolizing run right away. Nadal has gone 112-3 at the place since, right up through a year ago, when he overcame chronic pain in his left foot to become the oldest man to ...Latest news
