2023 was a rough year for many established retailers that struggled to emerge from the pandemic or were impacted by other economic factors, such as high mortgage rates which impacted home sales.Bed, Bath & Beyond, once a go-to for all imaginable home accessories, filed for bankruptcy in April and promptly closed all 896 of its brick-and-mortar stores nationwide, including its Buy Buy Baby brand. Now under new ownership, Bed, Bath & Beyond still serves customers through its relaunched website.Tuesday Morning, a discount home retailer that once had 700 locations in the U.S., filed for bankruptcy in February and eventually closed all stores.California-based Z Gallerie announced in early November that it too was closing all stores and going online only. 3 Hospitalized after Two-Vehicle Crash near Old Woman Springs RoadPALM SPRINGS, CA (December 11, 2023) – Chance Sistrunk, Christina Layden, and another victim sustained injuries Tuesday morning in a head-on collision.At approximately 6:48 a.m., law enforcement responded to an incident occurring in the northbound lanes of State Route 247 near Old Woman Springs Road.According to investigators, the driver of a 2013 Mini Cooper was traveling south on the freeway and crossed the double yellow lines.As a result, the Mini Cooper collided head-on with a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu traveling in the opposite direction. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Prosecutors filed murder charges against the boyfriend of Kimberly Wong. The 27-year-old San Francisco tech worker was found dead inside her Presidio Heights apartment on Nov 30.District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Monday that Scott Fisher, 29, of San Francisco, has been charged in connection to "a domestic violence homicide."Wong and Fisher were in a "dating relationship" and lived in the apartment together, prosecutors said. Wong was stabbed to death inside her apartment on Clay Street, according to prosecutors.Police officers were called to the apartment to conduct a welfare check on the same day as the homicide. Officers found Wong deceased.Fisher was not arrested until seven days later, on December 7, in Concord. He was booked into a San Francisco jail with no bail. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Changes are coming to BART fares in the new year, the transit agency announced on Monday. Beginning on Jan. 1, fares across the system will increase by 5.5%, raising the average fare by about 23 cents to $4.43, BART said.Riders taking a 12-mile trip from downtown Berkeley to Embarcadero would see a 25 cent fare increase to $4.75, BART said. A longer trip, such as the 45-mile trip from Antioch to Montgomery Street, would increase 40 cents to $8.60. (KRON) -- A security guard who was shot and killed at a 7-Eleven in Oakland Friday night has been identified as 59-year-old James Johnson, the Oakland Police Department said. Johnson was shot and killed while on the job Friday night at the 7-Eleven located in the 2300 block of Harrison Street. Scott Fisher charged with murdering San Francisco tech worker Officers and paramedics responded to the 7-Eleven around 10:15 p.m. Friday. The victim, Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene.An investigation revealed that Johnson was trying to prevent an individual from taking items from the store. That individual, police said, brandished a firearm and shot Johnson before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
